Black Beauty Eggplant - Purple
Solanum melongena
An annual plant that grows up to 50-60 cm tall with upright, branching stems that produce several large fruits with purple skin. It thrives in sunny and sheltered locations in warm years when grown in the ground, but it grows and fruits best under cover. For ground cultivation, sow in the second half of March. When the plant has one pair of leaves, transplant into pots or trays with holes 6-8 cm in diameter. Plant in the ground at the end of May with a spacing of 50-60 cm. It requires fertile, humus-rich soil that is well-watered. Avoid planting after cabbage, root vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers.
