Cucumis metuliferus
Annual plant from the pumpkin family with long creeping or climbing stems. It produces oval fruits measuring 10-15 cm in length and weighing 200-300 g. The fruit skin starts off green and then turns bright orange-yellow with light spots. The inside of the fruit is filled with greenish-yellow, juicy flesh with a refreshing taste, which is eaten raw along with the seeds. It is perfect for making fruit salads, desserts, and is also low in calories.
The fruits can be stored very well in the home (up to 6 months), serving as an original decorative element and remaining edible throughout. Sow the seeds in the second half of April, 2-3 seeds per pot with a diameter of 7-8 cm. Germination takes up to 2 weeks at a temperature of 20-24 C. Transplant the seedlings with 4-5 leaves in the second half of May, with a spacing of 1 x 1 m. Grow the plants under cover and support them on one stem, pinching off the side shoots after the second leaf.
