A biennial plant commonly known as valerian, with a sweet, honey-like scent. It produces a long stem with flower heads in the second year, and a rosette of odd-pinnate leaves in the first year. It prefers semi-shaded positions on fertile, permeable, and calcareous soils. Sow in rows with a spacing of 15 cm between each seed, without covering with soil but with a light pressing. Popular valerian drops are made from the roots and rhizomes.
