Common Artichoke VERT DE PROVENCE 1g (Cynara scolymus)
Artichoke 'VERT DE PROVENCE'
The artichoke 'Vert de Provence' is both a vegetable and a decorative plant. Its flowers are gathered in spherical inflorescences, surrounded by thick scales-shaped leaves. It requires a moist (but not waterlogged) and sunny position. Under favorable conditions, it can reach a height of up to 1.5m.
Other names: Spanish artichoke, thistle artichoke, cardoon
The seedlings should be prepared in a heated polytunnel or greenhouse (also at home on a windowsill). We start working in February. Sow 2-3 seeds in peat substrate-filled pots (pH 6 to 6.5). Until the cotyledons appear, try to maintain a temperature of 25°C (then the temperature is maintained between 15 to 20°C). If more than one seedling appears in the pot, leave the strongest one. If artichoke seeds were sown in multi-cell trays, after about a month, in the phase of two true leaves, transplant the seedlings into 8 cm diameter pots. In the second half of May, the plants are planted in rows. The artichoke cultivation beds should be located in a wind-protected and well-sunlit place. The soil should have a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. It should be fertile, permeable, and deeply cultivated. It is good if it was fertilized with manure the previous year.
